Books & Publications

As part of its mission to empower citizens and contribute to a robust national conversation through the practice of journalism for public interest, the foundation supports the publication of books, research, and works that contextualize important issues.

In December 2020, published the book, “Marawi Siege: Stories from the frontline,” by former Newsbreak staff writer (previous PCIJ Executive Director) Carmela Fonbuena.

The book documents key events during the seige based on the narratives of military officers, hostages, displaced civilians, local government officials, Maute Group fighters who left the fold, and leaders of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front. The book was one of nominees for the Witold Pilecki International Book Award in 2021.

In 2013, the Foundation published the ground-breaking book by Aries Rufo entitled Altar of Secrets: Sex, Money and Politics in the Philippine Catholic Church. The first of its kind in the Philippines, the book contains groundbreaking exposés on ranking prelates. These include investigative stories on the sexual indiscretions of high-profile bishops and multimillion-peso donations that remain unaccounted for.

Before JNBF was established in 2011, its predecessor, the Public Trust Media Group Inc, also published books and special magazine editions under the Newsbreak brand. These publications included:

  1. The Enemy Within: An inside story on military corruption, written by Glenda M. Gloria, Aries Rufo and Gemma Bagayaua-Mendoza, published in 2011.
  2. Shadow of Doubt: Probing the Supreme Court, written by Marites Dañguilan Vitug, published in 2010.
  3. The Seven Deadly Deals: Can Aquino Fix Arroyo’s costly and messy projects? Edited by Roel Landingin, published in 2011.
  4. Selling Candidates: Political Ads in the 2007 Senatorial Elections, written by Ana Tabunda, Carmela Fonbuena and Aries Rufo, published in 2008.
